Learn hand spinning yarn from wool

Hand spinning will be live in action on London Family Farm Day.  The Richmond Weavers and Spinners Guild will participate in London Family Farm Day with members there demonstrating their skills and techniques in making yarn from wool using the traditional wooden spinning wheel.  Kids and family members can have a chance to learn how to use the spinning equipment to make some yarn themselves.

If you have toured the London Farmhouse, you should have found a nice display of wooden spinning and weaving equipment in a room on the upper floor. Spinning yarn with hand-spinning wheels and weaving cloth with hand looms to make garments were common activities for women in family in the olden days. Since then, hand spinning and weaving have become a heritage and art activity.

The Richmond Weavers and Spinners Guild (RWSG) seeks to promote, encourage, and develop the art and craft of weaving, spinning, and dyeing in our community. The Richmond Weavers and Spinners Guild has about 30 members. They meet on the third Tuesday each month from September to June in the Fibre Arts Studio at the Richmond Cultural Center.

Feel and feed in the Petting Zoo

The Petting Zoo we are going to bring into London Family Farm Day this year will have a wide range of farm animals such as bunnies, pigs, ponies, goats and more. The Petting Zoo is meant to offer a real life opportunity for urban kids to learn about farm animals and to experience the joy of feeding and interacting with them.

Some of the animals from the previous years will be returning, while new animals are coming as well! The petting zoo will be a great activity for both newcomers and visitors with previous experience.

Hey Kids - Pony Ride will be back again!

All records in the past show that Pony Ride is always the hottest program for kids and so, it will be back again this year.

It is known that humans started to rely on horses as a means of transportation as far back as around 4500 BC. Long before the arrival of gasoline-powered vehicles, horses were used for transportation, for work or for pleasure.

In the olden days, many kids learned to ride on horses at an early age, but today pony rides are mostly for fun and pleasure.  According to May (London) Mack's recollections of her growing up on the London Farm, her sister Lucy "rode the Shetland pony" and so, Pony Ride is truly part of the London family heritage.

Judging by the usual long queue for Pony Ride on London Family Farm Day in previous years, it is undoubtedly an activity that kids love and get excited about.

Kids both in age and at heart will surely love interacting with ponies and getting to experience pony riding in a safe and fun environment.
